Johan Kriek - South African Tennis Champion
Johan Kriek (born April 5, 1958) is a South African / American professional male tennis player and founder of the Global Water Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to delivering clean water to the world's neediest communities.Kriek was born in Pongola, South Africa but moved to Naples, Florida after turning pro in 1978. His biggest victories came at the Australian Open where he won the title twice (in 1981 and 1982). In his career he has won fourteen singles titles and eight in doubles. Johan Kriek was ranked in the top twenty from 1980 to 1985, with a career best world ranking of #7 in 1984. He won fifteen singles titles and twelve doubles titles. He won the Australian Open twice and was in the semi final of the US Open in 1980. He told the Daily Herald that he now runs his own company SMI (Sports Masters International) and organizes events, exhibitions, and tournaments in tennis, golf and fishing.
Kriek became an American citizen in August, 1982.
He is currently active with promoting tennis and an example is a trip he made to the island of Anguila. At a special reception at Paradise Cove Johan Kriek was welcomed to the island of Anguila and thanked for his participation in the Tennis Academy on July 30, 2000. He told the people at the reception that he is happy to be in Anguilla and that he feels an affinity to Anguilla as he comes from a small community in South Africa although he now lives in Naples, Florida. He said that he is one hundred percent behind the idea of a tennis facility for the island and is very willing to help in the design, programme and the raising of funds for the project.
